The movie opens with the birth of a young horse, Spirit. As the name suggests, Spirit is now a courageous free stallion who ensures the safety of the herd. His curiosity leads him to captivity by US Cavalry who tried hard methods to break him down but couldn't. Spirit escapes with the help of a brave young Indian, Little Creek. Spirit falls for a charming mare, Rain. The Indian village is attacked and Spirit is captured again and led to railroad construction sites. The legendary Spirit escapes again. His spirit is too strong for a train locomotive to restrain. After a tough chase, Spirit and Little Creek perform an amazing jump that wins the respect of the colonel. Spirit rightfully deserves his new name, Spirit-who-could-not-be-broken.
